The weather was beautiful last weekend. The warm air brought hope for long summer days. It is planting season, so we bought seeds and sketched out our garden in our little notebook. We penciled in which bed would hold which vegetables. I couldn’t help wishing, as each plot was decided, that the months to come could be as thoughtfully considered. “When did life become more unpredictable than a garden?”

After we finished up our planning, I was prompted to do a little planning of my own. Our time has been filled with isolation with a few exceptions, and there are some things to consider. We tried to use this pandemic time for much reflection. We’ve encouraged rest, calming hobbies, family time, and practiced being still.

The last year has been similar to our garden beds. Pre-pandemic, they were filled with healthy veggies, overflowing and useful. Our life in the pandemic has resembled our winter beds, our fruit was picked, and we became quiet. It’s now spring, and the ground is ready for seeds.

We have an opportunity in front of us. We may not be able to plan for what is to come, but we can begin to plant the seeds for what we want to become. Like weeds in the beds, there has been plenty of time for our thoughts to be surrendered and collected. It’s time to till the ground of our hearts and begin to plant seeds of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (These are the fruits of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV.)

It is planting season. Will you plant seeds with me?
